2021 Ford F-150 engine and transmission options, towing and payload capacities

Ford is offering the F-150 with the buyer's choice of six engine options. Five of those engines are paired with the same transmission while the sixth, a hybrid, has a specialty transmission.

The 2021 Ford F-150 is available with six different engines and two different transmissions. For the first time ever, Ford will offer the F-150 will be offered with a hybrid variant across all trim levels. Scroll down to take an in-depth look at the powertrains including their horsepower, torque, towing capacity, and payload capacity.

It’s important to note that the forthcoming next-gen F-150 Raptor has not been revealed yet. When it is, it is likely to have a different engine than what is shown here.

3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6 FFV

This naturally-aspirated 60-degree V6 with overhead cams features an aluminum block and aluminum heads. It displaces 3.3-liters (3,340 cubic centimeters, 203.8 cubic inches). The engine has a bore x stroke of 3.56 inches x 3.41 inches and a compression ratio of 12:1. The direct acting mechanical bucket valvetrain is matched with a coil on plug ignition system.

The engine takes regular unleaded or E85 gasoline with a minimum of 87 unleaded octane. The engine control system is electronic and the coolant capacity of 12 liters. It has a six-quart oil service fill volume and tales 5W-20 SAE GF6 oil.

It comes with a truck with a 23-, 26-, or 36-gallon fuel capacity depending on bed/box configuration.

The engine gets 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque.

It has a maximum payload of 1,985 pounds and maximum conventional towing capacity of 8,200 pounds.

2.7-liter EcoBoost V6

This twin-turbocharged and intercooled 60-degree V6 with overhead cams is made from a compacted graphite iron block with aluminum heads. It displaces 2.7 liters, which is 2,700 cubic centimeters or 165.0 cubic inches. It has a bore x stroke of 3.267 inches x 3.267 inches and a 10:1 compression ratio. A roller finger follower valvetrain is standard as is the coil on plug ignition system.

The engine takes regular unleaded fuel with a minimum 87 octane rating. The engine control system is electronic and the coolant capacity of 14.3 liters. It has a six-quart oil service fill volume and tales 5W-30 SAE GF6 oil.

It comes with a truck with a 23-, 26-, or 36-gallon fuel capacity depending on bed/box configuration.

The engine gets 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.

It has a maximum payload of 2,480 pounds and maximum conventional towing capacity of 10,100 pounds.

5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8

The naturally aspirated 90-degree V8 with overhead cams is made from an aluminum block and has aluminum heads. It has a displacement of 5.0 liters (5.038 cubic centimeters, 307.0 cubic inches). Its bore x stroke is 3.66 inches x 3.65 inches. It has a 10:1 compression ratio. A roller finger follower valvetrain is standard as is the coil on plug ignition system.

The engine takes regular unleaded or E85 gasoline with a minimum of 87 unleaded octane. The engine control system is electronic and the coolant capacity of 12.5 liters. It has a 7.75-quart oil service fill volume and tales 5W-30 SAE GF6 oil.

It comes with a truck with a 23-, 26-, or 36-gallon fuel capacity depending on bed/box configuration.

The engine gets 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.

3.0-liter Power Stroke V6

The turbocharged and intercooled 60-degree V6 diesel engine is made of a compacted graphite iron block with aluminum heads. It has as displacement of 3.0 liters (3,000 cubic centimeters, 183.0 cubic inches) and a bore x stroke of 3.31 inches x 3.54 inches. Its compression ratio is 16:1. A roller finger follower valvetrain is standard as is the compression ignition system.

The engine takes ultra low sulfur diesel (up to B20 compatible), which is delivered by common rail. The engine control system is a multicore powertrain control module and the coolant capacity of 13.0 liters. It has a 6.5-quart oil service fill volume and tales 5W-30 SAE FA4 oil.

This engine comes with a truck with a 26 gallon fuel capacity.

The engine gets 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque.

It has a maximum payload of 1,840 pounds and maximum conventional towing capacity of 12,100 pounds.

3.5-liter EcoBoost V6

This twin-turbocharged and intercooled 60-degree V6 with overhead cams is made from an aluminum block with aluminum heads. It displaces 3.5-liters, which is 3,497 cubic centimeters or 213.4 cubic inches. It has a bore x stroke of 3.64 inches x 3.41 inches and a 10:5:1 compression ratio. A roller finger follower valvetrain is standard as is the coil on plug ignition system.

The power plant takes regular unleaded fuel with a minimum 87 octane rating. The engine control system is electronic and the coolant capacity of 14.5 liters. It has a six-quart oil service fill volume and tales 5W-30 SAE GF6 oil.

This engine option comes with a truck with a 30.6-gallon fuel capacity and can go up to 700 miles on a full tank of gas.

This power combination achieves 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque making it the most powerful option available.

It has a maximum payload of 2,120 pounds and maximum conventional towing capacity of 12,700 pounds.

10-Speed SelectShift Automatic Transmission

Ford pairs all of its engines in the F-150 except the hybrid with an electronically controlled 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. The transmission has the same gear ratios as the transmission that is in the hybrid model:

On paper, the modular hybrid transmission and the SelectShift automatic transmission are extremely similar. The real proof will be in the pudding when the hybrid powertrain, which includes a 35-kilowatt battery, amplifies the power the F-150 can provide. Here are its gear ratios:
