The GTO Engineering Squalo is set to begin arriving at customer homes in 2023.

The car previously codenamed Moderna has received a new name. The sub-1,000 kilogram car currently underdevelopment by GTO Engineering will be known as the Squalo. The company has also revealed a few more clues about what to expect from the auto.

The release of these photos is a significant milestone as the company ramps up toward production. Last November, GTO Engineering released the first images of the model.

“There’s been an outpour of admiration for what we’re doing here and we realize a little bit of skepticism whether we’re actually making this: a V12-powered, sub-ton sports car with a Sixties feel but modern reliability, enjoyment and manufacturing quality. We’re here to hopefully set the record straight to say yes, it’s happening and we’re sticking to our original ethos for the car as well as timing promises for production. We are also delighted to have early adopters and customer orders received already, and we thank them for the trust in our vision and business,” said GTO Engineering Managing Director and Founder Mark Lyon.

The final exterior design of the Squalo is complete, with updated surfaces that retain the car’s retro-modern looks. The looks of the car have been completely signed off on, including door handles and wing mirrors.

GTO Engineering’s team is created a bespoke wheel and tire package for the vehicle. There will be an available 18-inch alloy wheel for the model as well as tires that will be produced by “a leading manufacturer”.

The weight of the car is promised to be under 1,000 kilograms. Much of its heft is expected to come from its 4.0-liter quad-cam V12 engine. No engine specs are available at this time but we do know that the engine is paired with a manual gearbox. The company says that the engine has undergone lightweighting upgrades in recent months and that engineers have designed the Squalo’s open trumpets to be seen when the hood is opened

The car will be built from the ground up at GTO Engineer’s headquarters in the U.K.

“It’s often the small parts of a car that take the longest time. We’re now at a stage where the design models are being created here in the UK and soon we will announce our technical partners working with us on the exterior manufacturing and interiors, as well as wheels and tyres. In all my years working in the [automotive] industry, I’ve never been as excited about the creativity of manufacturing and design as I am now,” said Lyon.

The first customer deliveries of the car are set for 2023.
