It may look like your average school run sedan or wagon, but the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S is anything but. It’s the very definition of a sleeper and there’s few, if any, reason to not love it, especially with all its new model year refinements. Mercedes will continue to sell the model in sedan and wagon variants.
Mercedes has given the model a fresh front end, complete with an AMG-specific grille that has vertical slats and a large central star. All-LED multi beam headlights and functional air intakes flank the grille leading the eye toward flared wheel arches. The hood features a more rounded shape with twin domes. A new splitter reduces lift.
At the back are new, flatter taillights that extends into the trunk lid. A thin strip of high-gloss chrome connects them. On the wagon, the chrome extends up the end of the taillights. Buyers can get the lift gate of their wagon the same color as the vehicle or in carbon fiber as part of the available AMG Carbon-Fiber Package II.
Both models also have a freshly shaped bumper that helps with aerodynamics. The lower part is painted high-gloss black. Merceds has given the models’ twin 3.5-inch trapezoidal fluted tailpipes a new shape and are now finished in titanium matte. There is now a trim piece that runs the width of the car. It comes standard in silver but is available in high-gloss black as part of the AMG Night Package or in carbon fiber with AMG Exterior Carbon-Fiber Package I.
The E 63 S wears new 20-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in the buyer’s choice of high-gloss grey (standard) or matte black.
The E 63 S continues to be powered by an AMG 4.0-liter biturbo engine that achieves 603 horsepower and 627 pound feet-for torque. The engine is pared with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Race drive modes are available, as well as a manual-like “M” shift mode.
All models come standard with all-wheel drive. Drift Mode is available.
The German automaker has refined the interior of the car. Its AMG seats feature Nappa leather and feature AMG badging. The dashboard is also trimmed in the leather. Nappa leather in Black/Titanium Grey with yellow contrasting topstitching is available in the range as a new AMG-specific upholstery.
Mercedes has installed the company’s new MBUX infotainment system in the model. It features two 12.3-inch displays, one in front of the driver and the other in the center of the dashboard. Drivers can switch between Modern Classic, Sport, and Supersport display modes for the driver’s information screen. The system also has an AMG menu that allows users to select various displays specific to the model.
The car also has a new twin-spoke steering wheel with integrated buttons. It’s available to be ordered in leather, microfiber, or as a combination of leather and microfiber, and includes standard steering wheel heating.
