Not that long ago, the automotive world was bursting with affordable entry-level vehicles, but times have changed. Everything is more expensive now, and the vehicles that once made up the “must-see” list for cheap car shoppers are all gone or are far costlier than they used to be. There are a few compelling choices left, and one just got a facelift for 2023. The Nissan Versa offers standout styling, great tech, and a solid list of standard features, all for a super reasonable price.
Nissan plans to formally unveil the 2023 Versa at the Miami Auto Show later this week, but we have a few advanced details. The powertrain will remain from 2022, which includes a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a five-speed manual transmission in the base S trim, but all others come standard with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and the S is available with the gearbox.
Tech improvements include the S Plus Package for the base model, which brings 16-inch wheels, folding rear seats, and, most importantly, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wireless charging is now standard for the middle SV trim, and the top SR variant gets an 8-inch touchscreen, adaptive cruise, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and more.
What this means for you
While it’s easy to get caught up in the flash of a new car and the fun of the experience, it’s best to remember that even the most basic vehicles today are safer, more comfortable, and easier to live with than even high-end cars from a decade ago. The Nissan Versa may not be the most glamorous car you can buy, but the value proposition is hard to ignore when talking about a starting price that dips way below $20,000. Plus, the vehicle returns 40 mpg on the highway and 35 mpg combined, so running costs will be lower over time. If you’re on the fence about EVs and don’t want to spring the extra cash for a hybrid or PHEV, a car like the Versa is your best bet for lower fuel bills and a lower environmental impact.
