Volkswagen is gearing up to reveal the ID.4 but before the cover is off on that, the company is teasing its next reveal – a smaller SUV. The new model is slated to fit below the Tiguan and larger Atlas Cross and Atlas in the Volkswagen lineup.
In revealing the image, Volkswagen explained that the new model is a “second proof point” in Volkswagen’s “doubling-up SUV strategy”.
Reporting by numerous outlets indicates that the forthcoming model will be called “Tarek” and be around 10 inches shorter than the Tiguan. That would likely give it the same-ish proportions to the Subaru Crosstrek. Volkswagen sells a small crossover with the Tarek name overseas. It’s also called the Tharu in some markets.

“We’re excited to share the first glimpse of the newest member of the Volkswagen family,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “Great things come in small packages, as Volkswagen has proven throughout the years with its iconic Beetle, Golf and Jetta. This next car will be no exception.”
Volkswagen has a habit of using cultural names for its models. Tharu is the name of the ethnic indigenous people of southern Nepal and northern India. Tarek means “he who knocks at the door” and is the Turkish equivalent of the Aribic “Tariq”. Americans are likely most familiar with the name because of the male half of HGTV’s “Flip or Flop” starring Tarek El Moussa and his ex-wife Christina Anstead.
Reports also indicate that the model will come to market as a 2021 or 2022 model.
Earlier this year Volkswagen introduced a refreshed Tiguan but the U.S. won’t get it until next year. The front end of the refreshed 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan will now match the refreshed 2021 Atlas.
The model will officially be revealed on October 13.
