Performance, dynamics, and luxury combine in the BMW 8 Series. Elevate that equation even further and you get the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupé.
The company has optimized the aerodynamics of the car with larger air intakes on the front apron. At the back on the apron is a black diffuser insert. An Alpina-branded spoiler lip extends the body.
Buyers can get the car in an Alpina Blue Metallic and Alpina Green Metallic paint job. There are also a wide variety of BMW and BMW Individual paint finishes available to choose from.
To distinguish the new car from every other 8 Series are the car’s 21-inch forged wheels with 20-spoke design. The lockable wheel hub cover has the Alpina emblem. The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli tires. A Pirelli Noise Cancelling System is fitted to the front tires. The company is also offering a forged wheel for winter and all-season tires without a wheel hub cover.
Blue four-piston fixed brake calipers with white Alpina lettering by Brembo are paired with 15.6-inch brake discs on the front axle and floating brake calipers with 15.7-inch brake discs at the rear.
The 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 is tuned to get 612 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Engineers have paired the engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The large car can rocket to 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.3 seconds and reaches one-quarter of a mile in 11.5 seconds. Its maximum speed is 201 mph.
In Comfort mode, the engine relaxes with low rpms but remains responsive and the exhaust isn’t as throaty. Up the driving game to Sport mode and the shift points are optimized and the active exhaust gets a little more active. Manual mode offers fast shifts.
The car’s chassis and suspension setup have been honed to make the most of the sport suspension system’s capabilities. Comfort during the drive is delivered via front axle struts with hydro mounts while Eibach springs work to keep the car balanced. There are stiffer suspension struts in this model than the 8 Series original and reinforced sway bars on the front axle. Stiffer lower wishbone mounts enhance the car’s lateral movements. All-wheel drive is standard. A ear axle limited-slip differential lets the car corner like a champ.
Installers will build each Apina B8 with standard Alpina interior trim in Walnut Anthracite high-gloss, Alpina door sills, and a crystal glass iDrive controller that’s etched with the Alpina logo. The steering wheel is wrapped in natural, untreated Lavalina leather.
The long list of standard features on the car includes multi-functional seats, ventilated front seats, seat and steering wheel heating, BMW Individual extended Merino leather upholstery as well as a leather-covered instrument panel and an Anthracite Alcantara headliner. There’s also a panoramic glass sunroof, Harman Kardon surround sound system, Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight, and a full color digital instrument display.
The 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupé arrives in U.S. dealers in Late Spring 2021 and will have an MSRP of $139,900 and carry a $995 destination charge.
