Ranked: 15 worst-selling new vehicles in the U.S. in 2020

The Alfa Romeo 4C is perennially one of the worst-selling new cars in the U.S.

Some cars, like the Toyota Camry and Honda CR-V, sell well. It seems like you see them everywhere. Occasionally, on dealer lots you’ll see a leftover model from the previous year waiting to be sold, but it’s likely to be snatched up quickly. The vehicles on this list are the opposite.

Most of these models are the equivalent of the leftovers you forgot about in the back of the fridge for months after Thanksgiving. The majority of them aren’t even made anymore.

One thing you will notice; super luxury models aren’t on the list. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Rolls-Royces, among others, get a pass because of their scarcity.

All tallies are based on the latest sales results made publicly available by automakers. Note that Volkswagen has decided to tally all models outside the current model year in an “other” column on their sales sheets so AutomotiveMap is unable to track the weak sales of their older new models that still remain on dealer lots.

Audi TT (277 sold)

The Audi TT sports coupe has not sold well in the U.S. for a number of years. Could it be that though it’s zippy and sporty, there’s just other models that come to mind first? You have to admit that it’s $45,000-ish starting price is pretty good.

Fiat 500L (254 sold)

The Fiat 500L seems to not be near the top of anyone’s must-buy list. The two-row car is longer than the 500, but not much. Though it’s one of the worst-selling models in the U.S., its fellow stablemates aren’t too far behind.

BMW i3 (252 sold)

The i3 is BMW’s all-electric compact car. The i3 delivers a zippy ride but is held back by its hefty price tag, tight seatings and only two traditional doors.

Toyota Mirai (236 sold)

The Toyota Mirai has been redesigned for the 2021 model year but due to the lack of hydrogen infrastructure build out, its appeal remains limited, despite how good looking it is.

Buick LaCrosse (209 sold)

More than a few Buick LaCrosses languish on dealer lots despite the model being cut from the Buick lineup in favor of new SUVs.

Kia K900 (150 sold)

Kia not only still makes the K900, it’s just been through a generational redesign. The model gets high marks from reviewers but it’s never really caught on here in the U.S. It is more popular in Kia’s native Korea.

Infiniti QX30 (133 sold)

The Infiniti QX30 was co-developed alongside the Mercedes-Benz GLA. It quickly came and went from the bulk of the U.S. market but 133 people have still taken one home this year.

Lincoln MKT (129 sold)

The last Lincoln MKT has rolled off the line but a few buyers are still getting theirs. The model, perhaps best known as the chariot of choice for car service drivers in the Motor City is highly regarded for its cabin and cargo space.

Infiniti QX70 (129 sold)

Infiniti sold 954 QX70s in 2018 but just six were sold in 2019. The model was discontinued in 2017. Infinit’s QX50 has picked up much of the slack from the hole the QX70 left and the model’s body style will see a bit of a resurgence when the QX55 debuts in November.

The last model year for the Cadillac ATS was 2019. Like its big brother the CTS, the ATS delivered a connected drive experience and a robust engine lineup. Cadillac sold just 1,134 ATS models in 2019, down from the model’s high of 63,049 global sales in 2015.

Hyundai Nexo (92 sold)

The Nexo is Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered SUV. It’s only sold in a few markets due to the lack of widespread hydrogen fueling infrastructure. The model features premium appointments and delivers a quiet ride.

Alfa Romeo 4C (71 sold)

The Alfa Romeo 4C coupe is one of the few models on this list still in production. Though Alfa doesn’t produce or sell many of the cars, they’re considered one of the more fun vehicles you can get behind the wheel of. That assessment doesn’t take into account their aging infotainment system, shoddy interior, and harsh ride.

Chevrolet Volt (62 sold)

The Chevrolet Volt ended its model year run in 2019. Drivers liked that you could travel over 1,000 miles between fill ups, but Chevy’s evolving product plan meant that the Volt’s run had to come to an end.

Buick Cascada (11 sold)

For a very limited time, Buick sold the Cascada, a comfortable cruiser convertible for those that don’t require the latest technology and aren’t wholly concerned about fuel efficiency.

Dodge Dart (5 sold)

In September 2016, production of the Dodge Dart ended. And yet, despite no new ones being made in three years, 15 new Darts were sold to customers. In 2014, Fiat Chrysler’s then-CEO Sergio Marchionne said that Dart customers who wanted a hatchback could be served by the Jeep Renegade or the Fiat 500X, two models that remain on U.S. lots today.

Chrysler 200 (3 sold)

The Chrysler 200 fell out of favor at FCA right around the same time as the Dodge Dart. Despite this, 48 people still bought the model in 2019.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class (1 sold)

Head to the Mercedes-Benz website and you won’t even find the B-Class listed for sale. The second generation, which was produced from 2011-2018, was sold in the U.S., though it wouldn’t be considered a popular model by any stretch of the imagination. In 2018, the luxury automaker sold 135 of the models in the U.S.

Honda CR-Z (1 sold)

Honda only sold two new CR-Zs in 2019, down from the 28 they sold in 2018. The hybrid coupe was last made in 2016. It was discontinued to make room for Honda Accord Hybrid and Clarity production.

Jeep Patriot (1 sold)

In the words of Led Zeppelin, “I just can’t quit you baby.” Despite the new Jeep Compass and upgraded Jeep Renegade being suitable alternatives to the Patriot, one buyers still purchased the Patriot in 2020. That’s down from the 621 FCA sold in 2018 and 27 that were sold last year.
